Which Way is UP?

A big shout out should be given to the PanAm Games.  Besides making all the construction downtown Toronto a nightmare for the past few years – now that the Games are finally here, we as Torontonians can rejoice at the new infrastructure we have built to welcome the athletes and fans to our beloved city.

Negotiations with Fate in Nassau

As each salty wave crashed into me, I struggled to keep hold of my paddle and baseball cap. I began timing my breaths of air with each pause between the endless gushes of ocean water that were becoming more and more violent.  Down the cove, my bright yellow board drifted farther away from me with … [Read more…]

Look Out Cleveland!

According to my recent Google search, there are more than 20 songs written about Cleveland, or at least the Northeast Ohio region.  Not just local bands sing about this city – REM, Scott Weiland, The Band and Frank Zappa all have songs telling tales about this town I knew very little about.

Why I Travel

EiffelTower

It has been a few months since I’ve sat in front of the computer to write about travel.  It’s not that my passion for travel has diminished.  It’s not that I haven’t been travelling.  Unfortunately, some stress I’ve had in my life has temporary stripped my desire to share my passions. Yet today, I’ve woken … [Read more…]

ReykjavikIcelandFireworksNYEintro

One of the few benefits about getting older is getting vacation during “prime time”.  This past year, both Bruce and I lucked out and were able to take the week during New Year’s off, so we booked a family trip to Iceland.  We had a few months to plan our week and came up with … [Read more…]

A Tale in 10 Frames – Finland

Top10FinlandHelsinkiCathedral-intro

“Why are you visiting Finland? Isn’t it just like Canada?” so asked one of the Finns we met on our travels.  In a lot of ways, Finland is very much like Canada – a cosmopolitian capital, areas of vast wilderness, and a love of hockey.  But Finland differs with it’s European architecture, cobblestone streets, passion … [Read more…]

TallinnEstoniaCobblestoneStreets

Tallinn, Estonia is located on the south shores of the Baltic Sea, and can easily be a day trip, a short overnight or weekend holiday from Helsinki, Finland. With limited time on our vacation in Finland, we decided to spend just one night in this UNESCO heritage site – known for it’s magical medieval atmosphere.

Sleeping Around in Finland

GlassIglooFinlandNighttime

After initially booking our flight to Helsinki, my quest to find accommodation began. I had heard rumour that many hotels in Finland were generic and dull, but I read a blog about a girl who had stayed in a hotel in Helsinki that was originally a prison and my interest was piqued. Using other travel … [Read more…]

Pub Crawl Turku

A public toilet, an old bank, a school house and a pharmacy.  What do these four things have in common?  In the west coast city of Turku Finland, they are all buildings that are now occupied by a pub.  I love finding fun themes when I tour a new place, and what better theme is … [Read more…]
