Built in 1961, but open as a hotel just a few years ago, this was by far the most interesting place I’ve ever stayed. Situated just north of the main town of Siem Reap, Cambodia, this was both a perfect place to stay while exploring the Angkor Wat temples during the day, and the markets at night. Not just a hotel, the 1961 is also an art gallery, artistic workspace, restaurant, bar and shopping centre.

The 1961 Front Gates
The 1961 Main Entrance
The 1961 Restaurant
The 1961 Artist Gallery – one of a few workspaces available
The Yellow Submarine, one of the 8 themed hotel rooms – a Beatles fan paradise!
The Kennedy’s themed room – more red, white and blue than you could imagine
More of the Kennedy’s room – love the astronaut painted on the bathroom door
The Cambodian architect Vann Molyvann inspired room
Vann Molyvann bathroom door – every room rich in detail
The Sinn Sisamouth and Ros Sereysothea room – two Cambodian musicians from the 1960’s era
Ranging from $30 – $50 a night, including breakfast, the 1961 is both affordable and comfortable. But with only 8 rooms, I would recommend reserving a room in advance. If you are unable to stay the night, try to stop by for a coffee or beer. Great music in the lobby, interesting books available and always something going on – a definite highlight on our adventure through South East Asia.
